The thirtieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall was launched at the famous and grand Bode Museum in Berlin with an elaborate gala, on the evening of November 8, 2019 hosted by the Mayor of Berlin Michael Müller at the city of Berlin. Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus was invited by the City of Berlin as the only foreign Keynote Speaker on this occasion. The event was attended by 300 dignitaries of the city including the Mayor of Berlin, to mark the thirty year old peaceful revolution of the fall of the Wall. The invitees included those who led the peaceful revolution that led to the fall of the Wall including journalists, activists and witnesses of former GDR (German Democratic Republic, i.e. East Germany).
In his address Professor Yunus congratulated the City of Berlin on 30 years of the fall of the Wall, and said it marked an event that changed the course of not only Berlin and Germany but the entire course of the world. The fall of Berlin Wall made us believe that the impossible can suddenly and unexpectedly become possible, if we continue to keep up our relentless efforts. Not only did the Berlin Wall fall suddenly, it brought about quick domino effect in changing the whole world. We started to think that not only has it brought peace, but it will now be possible to solve all the problems of world. But unfortunately that has not happened. He said that it is now clear that our struggle remains unfinished. The Berlin Wall may have fallen, but many walls remain. Walls in our economic thinking have remained formidable. Wealth concentration systematically continues to build walls dividing society, leading to a socially explosive situation. Some political leaders have dedicated themselves to build actual walls. Wall in our business thinking is set to destroy our environment within coming decades. Celebration of the fall of Berlin Wall is an occasion to rethink and dedicate ourselves to finish our unfinished work by demolishing all the remaining old walls, and the newly emerging walls.

The gala event was joined by distinguished personalities such as former Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit and former Berlin Mayor Walter Momper who became the first mayor of a reunited Berlin. Momper on 3 October 1990 also served as President of the Bundesrat in 1989-90. Eminent journalist Peter Brinkmann whose question at the press conference when it was first announced on November 1, 1989 was when can East Berliners travel to West Berlin. He received the answer from the East German government spokesperson – “immediately”. They opened the floodgate of people running to the Wall. Journalist Peter Brinkmann also spoke at this Launching Ceremony. Prominent activists who led the peaceful revolution spoke at the event including the Der Spiegel journalist Georg Mascolo who recorded the first images of people crossing the border when it opened.
On November 9 evening, the anniversary date of the fall of the Wall, Professor Yunus was invited as Guest of Honor to the official 30th Anniversary celebrations at the Brandenburg Gate where the Mayor of Berlin Michael Müller and the President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier addressed the audience of thousands among other speakers and artists.
