The basic form of most of these Old Indian Dowry Chest is large and rectangular. Usually, they are flat on top (though some are curved), so that they could be used as a bench or small table; sometimes they were built with drawers below the main compartment and, often, there was a smaller compartment inside the lid for holding valuables. This Old Indian Dowry Chest was used as Hope Chests to store a bride's dowry and after the wedding used for storing clothing and other valuables. Today they would make great sideboards for hallways, kitchens, etc. The box has a metal clasp and two long hinges which open one half of the top face of the box. There are numerous geometric carved patterns around the sides of the box and circular patterns on the top.
