Press Release (15 April, 2020)
Grameen Shikkha (Grameen Education), one of the organizations in the Grameen family, has been conducting different development programs for the poor especially poor children and students for more than two decades. These programs include the Scholarship Management Program, Non-formal Primary Schools, Pre-primary Schools, Vocational Training Program, Early Childhood Development Program etc. and have directly benefited more than 360,000 people.
One of the programs of Shikkha is the non-formal primary school program, popularly called as “Slum School,” conducted in the slums in Mirpur sections 10, 11, 12 and 13 under Dhaka City Corporation. There are 39 such schools, which are providing five years primary education to nearly 1,500 poor, slum children. Many of these children are fatherless or motherless or totally parentless and their guardians are employed in jobs like housemaid, day laborer, rickshaw-van puller, street hawker, embroiderer etc.
The COVID-19 situation in recent time has put many of these families into utter destitution. As income of the family earner has stopped members of these families are virtually starving. GS has identified 163 such families (with a total of 815 members) and has embarked on an emergency food support program for these people for a period of three months. The ideal food package comprises 7 kg rice, 1 kg lentil, 1 liter cooking oil, 5 kg potatoes and a piece of bath soap for a week. While GS employees started the program on their own, Grameen Kalyan (Grameen Welfare), one of the flag bearers of Grameen welfare activities, came forward to financially support the program. Besides, GS employees are supporting 49 poor, orphan and destitute people in Madhabpur area of Singair, where Shikkha is conducting some pre-schools, under the emergency food supply program.
It should be mentioned here that Shikkha is not organizing any publicity program for distribution of food; it is arranging to send the food directly to the doorsteps of the beneficiaries.
