Social Business Course Launched at Daffodil University

The 531st Social Business Design Lab organized by Yunus Centre took place on 27th March 2017 at the Grameen Bank Auditorium with nearly 150 national and international participants from India, Nepal, Malaysia and France. The Design Lab was chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. 

Six new Nobin Udyokta (or New Entrepreneur) business plans were presented at today's Lab. The business plans included a cycle repairing shop, a ready-made garments shop, a tailoring shop, a flower shop. Salman Pushpo Kutir project was presented by a seasoned florist Md. Humayun Kabir. With ten years of experience, Mr Kabir now wants to realize his dream to expand the business using his experience. Shuvo Saj Fashion Wear project was presented by Ms Sultana Razia, mother of one. Ms Razia, a divorcee, is a strong woman who wants to thrive as an independent entrepreneur through her shop. Md. Sayeed Hossain presented his Ma Babar Doa Repairing Workshop at the design lab. Though without formal training, Mr Hossain is a skilled technician with 12 years of experience. He now wants to utilize his experience through this repairing shop. Ruponti Boutique House project was presented Ms. Farhana Flora, mother of two. She has sought investment to scale up her clothing and nakshi kantha (quilt) business.  Baby Garments & Handicrafts  project was presented by Mr Shojol Pal, a skilled craftsman making handmade clay products ranging from jewellry to candleholders and so on. Equity investment from social business fund will enable him to supply his handicraft products to urban showrooms. Tushar Metal project was presented by Mr Tushar Ahmed who has metal crockery business. All six entrepreneurs are children coming from Grameen Bank families.

All business plans were presented and discussed in detail. Those were then presented in groups for further review. All projects were approved for funding by their groups. The projects are joint ventures with social business funds and their progress will be monitored on www.socialbusinesspedia.com.

Since the Labs began in January 2013, there are now more than 13,500 projects which have been presented in the last 530 Lab programs, of which 13318 projects have been approved for equity funding investments ranging from taka one lakh to five lakh for Nobin Udyokta projects from the social business funds.

During today's Design Lab Professor Yunus presented the certificates to the students of the short course on social business being conducted by Daffodil University through a ceremony at the Design Lab.

Professor Yunus thanked the participants and invited them to join next Social Business Design Lab which will take place on May 17, 2017.
