Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus had an hour long meeting  with the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, wife of  Malaysian political leader Anwar Ibrahim,  at the Parliament Building in Malaysia. Professor Yunus presented to her the activities of  Malaysian Network of Social Business involving five leading universities which created Yunus Social  Business  Centres, along with My Harapan, a national youth organization. Vice chancellors of two leading national universities which are members of the Social  business network joined professor Yunus in the discussion. It was agreed during the meeting that the Deputy Prime Minister will meet the leaders of the network every month to review the progress of the social business in the country.

Professor Yunus is on a tour of Malyasia since September  11. He concludes the tour today, on September  17 after addressing a group of of top business leaders of  Malaysia. 

The tour is organized by Malaysian Social Business Network (mySBN) which includes myHarapan, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Institut Darul Ridzuan. 

The tour kicked off  in Penang through the event designed as Nobel Talk “A World of Three Zeros- The Role of Academic, Corporate and Public” at Universiti Sains Malaysia. Prof. Yunus addressed a crowd of thousand people comprising of students, entrepreneurs, management officials from corporate sector and the public sector, where the Mayor of Penang gave the welcome speech.  Later at the event, responded to their queries on how social business can help achieve a world of zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero net carbon emissions.  Mayor announced that he will follow the footstep of Ipoh and make Penang a social business city.

Prof. Yunus had a meeting with CEO, Tekun Nasional, an organization under the Ministry of Entrepreneurial and Cooperative Development of Malaysia  to explore how some of their programme can be converted into social  business. 

He addressed a gathering of social entrepreneurs from the city and encouraged them to apply their technological skill in solvong social problems at the Penang Science Cluster.

He made a  visit to a coastal village where he was introduced to a social business nursery dedicated to working towards preserving the coastline from erosion via plantling mangrove  in the coastline. Villagers  showcased their work to Prof. Yunus. The Nobel Laureate planted the mangrove saplings as a token of participation in the efforts of the village women.

On Aug 12 Professor Yunus headed to Ipoh which is the capital of the state of Perak. At Ipoh, he met with the former  Chief Minister of Perak Dr Zambry, who has been a champion of social business during his term as chief minister  declared Ipoh, capital of Perak, as the social  business city.  Yunus  addressed a large meeting of the leading citizens of the city, which was addressed by two senior ministers of the recently elected state government.

On the third day of the tour, Prof. Yunus headed to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lampur. At Kuala Lampur, Prof. Yunus addressed the senior executives of Petronas, the state owned oil and gas company.

Prof. Yunus attended the closing ceremony of Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (ESTCON) 2018 as a Keynote Speaker at the Petronas  twin tower complex. Over 1000 research and innovation experts from 40 countries partook in ESTCON 2018 where Yeo Bee Yin, Minister of Energy, Green Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment, Malaysia presided over the closing session.

At the event, Prof Yunus spoke on the threats of artificial intelligence and the need for responsible technological advancement. The event has been organized by Universiti Teknologi Petronas and supported by the oil and gas giant  Petronas.

Prof. Yunus who is a member of the Academic Advisory Council (AAC) of the University of technology  founded by Petronas attended the two day long meeting of the Advisory  Council.

He said universities are the navigators of the society. Their job to help the wolrd go on the right direction and avoid taking wrong turns. They also train the future pilots of the world. When you train pilots for present you become training institution, you fail to be one a  university. University task is the make aware that they possess enormous power, raise the question how are they going to use the power fully. If they dont use the power it will be all wasted. He said if we dont change things quickly human being get extinct within this century. Universities must show the mankind how they can avoid getting extinct.
