Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus was a Chief Guest at The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) on February 2 organized at the Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM) to discuss the mission, vision and the practice for generating sustainable banking and social businesses including micro-finance at Kharagpur, West Bengal, India.

IIT Kharagpur is a public engineering institution established by the government of India back in 1951. It was the first of the IIT’s to be established and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The School has an astounding 3,000 Ph.D students at the school among a total of 12,000 students.

According to a Professor of IIT Kharagpur who attended the lecture, “Prof Yunus' speech was mind liberating, opening up a completely new way of thinking about education, economics, business, banking, entrepreneurship, empowerment and the human being”. Professor Yunus expressed his deep feeling that the Artificial Intelligence, the way it is being designed now, will bring an end  to human beings on this planet. IIT Kharagpur is one of the leading institutions in the world in designing Artificial Intelligence.

Processor Yunus visited the neighbouring villages surroundeing the IIT campus to meet the poor farmers outside perimeter of the campus, and visited various laboratories experimenting with many new technologies in communication, agriculture and other branches of science and engineering. He also had a meeting with the senior faculty members chaired by the head of IIT.

IIT Kharagpur is preparing to  establish a Yunus Social Business Centre and undertake  collaborative programmes Yunus Centre Dhaka.
