Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus released the early results of the first-of-its-kind random study-assignment through research findings of “Microfinance in the United States: Early Impacts of the Grameen America Program” with Grameen America, in New York on 8 March 2019. The date was chosen to commemorate the achievement of women all around the world on International Women’s Day. Professor Yunus presided over the board meeting of Grameen America Inc on the same day.
Founded by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus, Grameen America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit microfinance organization dedicated to helping entrepreneurial women who live in poverty build small businesses to enable financial mobility. The organization offers microloans, training, and support to transform communities and fight poverty in the United States. Since opening in January 2008, Grameen America has disbursed over $1.08 billion in microloans to more than 113,000 women members.
The research study released by the fastest growing nonprofit microfinance organizations in the United States – Nonprofit research organization MDRC and Grameen America, Inc., was funded by Robin Hood, and it is the most rigorous, independent, third-party evaluation of group microfinance in the United States, assessing Grameen America’s program.
The research findings proved that more than 94 percent of Grameen America members are financially better off than the previous year with a 13 percent point increase over the control group average; the Grameen America program attained a 22 percent point increase as the credit score and 6 percent as the prime credit score; the members are ahead through a 13 percent points score to buy their necessary needs; and over 95 percent members informed of their functionality in their operated businesses after joining this program for six months with an increase of 11 percentage points over the control group average.
