Professor Muhammad Yunus inaugurated Grameen Telecom Trust’s (GTT) very first social business project through a video conference today (1st April) at Yunus centre. The project titled ‘SDRS Social Business Project’ is based in the Gaibandha District, Bangladesh.
It will focus on enhancing income of women belonging to poor households by ensuring that they get the best price for producing caps which will be exported to Oman. Prof. Yunus talked to the personnel and beneficiaries involved in the project and assured them to provide full support. The SDRS social business project team thanked him for his inspiration. Finally Prof. Yunus wished them the very best in their noble endeavors. Previously a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between SDRS (Social Development Rural Society), an NGO from Gaibandha, and GTT on February 12, 2013.
This initiative comes under the ‘Social Business Innovation Fund’ (SBIF) created by GTT for encouraging innovative enterprises to undertake social businesses through the learning by doing approach. The aim is to support successful and tested models that can be replicated and scaled up. GTT considers those enterprises as innovative which take creative steps in benefiting its client with a social objective by broadening opportunities for wage employment or increasing income through entrepreneurial activities thus enhancing their socio-economic condition as a whole following the principles of social business. Ms. Parveen Mahmud, Managing Director of Grameen Telecom Trust and Md. Ashraful Hassan, CEO of Grameen Telecom Trust was also present in that inauguration program.
