Objective:

Salt cultivation will create employment of thousands of people in the region and will assure a fair trade agreement with the “salt growers” by ending the exploitive system controlled by the middleman.

Project Status:

This project is currently in the development stage. Project Partner, Grameen Telecom Trust has undertaken a site visit. It has been found that the business suffers from cash crisis (both salt farmers and the middle men). There is indeed a disparity between the price received by farmers and the final price at which the raw salt is sold. However, this margin is taken by middle men at various stages for service (quality assurance, mobilization of bulk quantities, transportation etc) they provide. In addition, the initial business plan entailed a salt mill, the feasibility of which has to be checked. Given all this, further research on this project will have to be undertaken to assess overall feasibility of project.
